Anyone who has spent time in the Western Hill Country of Texas knows that when the weather is beautiful, there is no shortage of activities in the area. The Frio Freedom Fest is part of that strong tradition of exciting events taking place in Concan, TX. Read on to learn more about all the Frio Freedom Fest has to offer.

The Basics

The Frio Freedom Fest is an annual event that features just about everything you could want out of a large outdoor event, namely excellent food (and lots of it) as well as an abundance of activities. The festivities take place on March 3rd and 4th at the Frio Country Campground in Concan, TX. The fantastic setting and surroundings for the festival lend a spectacular atmosphere and ambiance to everything that takes place over the two days of events.

The Food

One of the main draws to the Frio Freedom Fest is the barbecue cook-off and bake-off competitions that feature a variety of courses and food types that are sure to please. The cook-off is set up as a team competition with competitors coming from far and wide to compete for the top prize in fajitas, beans, chicken, ribs, and brisket. If you and your crew think you have what it takes to sway the judges, click the following links to download the cook-off entry form, bake-off entry form, and rules respectively. There is even a “Kid’s Que” competition that allows the little ones to get in on the action. If consumption of barbecue is more your speed, there will be plenty to sample.

The Activities

As if the food wasn’t enough to get your attention, the organizers of the Frio Freedom Fest have also provided a plethora of entertainment for you to enjoy. There is live music throughout the festival as well as horseshoes and washers tournaments on the 4th starting at 10:30 am. There is also a silent auction as well as raffles to help you pick up some new items for you or a loved one. There is even an outdoor mechanical bull so you can test your cowboy (or cowgirl) skills against the mechanized beast in the beautiful hill country air. Lastly (but certainly not least), there is the river that is close to where the festival is held. The river provides an excellent opportunity to participate in a number activities or just laze along the banks while eating some delicious food and listening to some excellent live music.
